“Music enhances the process of learning. The systems they nourish, which include our integrated sensory, attention, cognitive, emotional and motor capacities, are shown to be the driving forces behind all other learning.”

(Konrad, R.R. Empathy, Arts and Social Studies, 2000)

Standard Lessons

Students can learn their instrument of choice from flute, piccolo or both. Weekly individual lessons range from 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 60 minutes depending on their level. Beginner students study from “A Tune A Day for Flute” with attention paid to learning how to read music, count rhythms, develop correct articulation {tonguing} technique and posture, and teaching on how to play with a clear, pure sound using correct diaphragmatic breathing.

Optimal Age For Learning The Flute

At Flute Lessons Perth students are accepted for lessons from the age of 6 years and up. For those students whose arms aren’t long enough to hold the standard concert flute, flutes with bent heads are commonly used making playing accessible to students of all arm lengths. Please see illustration to the right of a student holding a bent head flute.

Additionally braces are of no hinderance to flute playing. It is very common for students to go through a period of lessons where they are wearing braces.

AMEB Exams

As part of the teaching process Flute Lessons Perth routinely offers all students additional opportunities to supplement their lessons by sitting for external exams such as those offered by the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB).

Scholarships and Auditions

Students are also regularly assisted if they wish to prepare for music scholarships, or music performance auditions. Flute Lessons Perth boasts an exceptional success rate across all of these areas mentioned. Click here for Awards and Scholarships.

Year 11 and 12 Music

Lessons are also provided for students in year 11-12 who are studying flute as a year 12 subject.

Tertiary

For those students studying music degrees at WAAPA and UWA who wish to supplement their graduate and postgraduate lessons with private lessons can receive expert teaching to mastery level.

“Teaching through the arts motivates children and increases their aptitude for learning.”

(Eric Jensen, Arts with the Brain in Mind, 2001)

Music Theory

Flute Lessons Perth also offers all interested students instruction in Music Theory.

Theory lessons offered follow the Dulcie Holland Music Theory Course. For students wishing to study theory as a separate course, and sit AMEB theory exams, instruction is usually carried out as a separate lesson in addition to the weekly flute lesson. Alternately for students just wishing to study theory casually at a slower pace without sitting exams, theory instruction can be carried out during the last 15 minutes of the weekly flute lesson.

For students wishing to sit AMEB practical exams Grade 6 and above, obtaining a pass mark in related theory exams is required. For LMusA a pass in Grade 6 music theory is required. For AMusA students a pass in Grade 5 Music theory is required. For certificate of Performance and Grade 8, a pass in Grade 4 Music is required. For Grade 7, Grade 3 Music Theory is required and for Grade 6, grade 2 Music Theory is required.

While studying music theory is optional for all students not sitting AMEB exams, it is advantageous for those students in primary school wishing to study music as an option at secondary school level or additionally for those students at secondary school already studying music as an option.
